Abstract

This study aimed to develop a parents’ educational program model for immigrant women that can be easily applied for early childhood education institutes their children were attending. For the purpose, this study reviewed previous studies on needs of parents’ education, how to teach Korean language and parents, education provided by children’s education institutes, and adopted a storytelling activity-based education method. As Korean fairy tales have similar contents with those of other countries, it is easy for immigrant women to understand them. As they have cultural elements as well as Korean language, they can be used as good Korean language textbooks both for children from multi-cultural families and non-Korean parents. Through a bibliographical review, this study adopted education contents and interviewed immigrant parents, their families and 15 early childhood teachers and determined program contents and how to apply it based on the interview. Two academic experts and four teachers tested the validity of the program draft and assisted in revising some of the contents. To verify applicability of the program model, 30 immigrant women from 5 countries participated in a 5-week preliminary test and were interviewed to confirm the entire contents, structure, methods of execution and validity of the procedure during the preliminary test. Then, a final program model was decided. © Rushing Water Publishers Ltd. 2018.
