Abstract

To determine the prevalence of chronic otitis media (COM) and of hearing impairment, otoscopy and hearing screening were performed in 619 schoolchildren in a refugee camp in Angola. Their general state of health was also examined. Considering refugee children as a high-risk group for infectious diseases, the prevalence of COM was lower than might be expected, 3.4%, and equalled the one found in our earlier study among Angolan urban schoolchildren. Two children out of 619 (0.3%) had a hearing impairment of >30 dB in the better hearing ear. The well-functioning health care in the refugee camp may be a possible explanation of the comparatively low prevalence rates.
