Abstract

This paper discusses themes raised by a symposium held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, September 1994, to discuss refugee problems in Africa. The symposium was structured around the nature of the displacements and forced population movements in Africa; the impact of the Organisation of African Unity Convention (1969) on issues of protection of refugees, returnees and displaced people; paradigms for analysing root causes of displacement and proposed models to resolve refugee flows: operational aspects and challenges faced in refugee assistance and protection; and the need for the formal adoption of proposals raised by this symposium. -from Author
