Abstract
A project was conducted by the Psychosocial Centre for Refugees and the Institute of Psychology, both at the University of Oslo, to develop meaningful conversations with refugee families. Families and their helping systems were interviewed with regard to the problem they presented, its effect on those involved, and the solutions envisaged. The main focus was on how a working relationship could be established and followed up. Some pitfalls and obstacles are described, especially those arising from differing expectations and conceptions of help. Useful strategies are suggested. A positive approach focuses on clients' resources and strengths, with less weight on pathology. A therapist position characterized by true curiosity and exploration is advocated, giving room to the refugees' own expertise, experience and direction. © 1994 Oxford University Press.
