Abstract

The authors present the case of a 4 year old male child with persistently severe eosinophilia but no changes in other hematologic values, with three months of evolution, featuring pleural and pericardic effusions and ascites. Formerly inconclusive, the Toxocara canis serology (ELISA test) became positive later on. High eosonophil counts persisted in spite of successive anti-helmintic therapeutic courses. After institution of corticotherapy a rapid reduction of the eosinophils and improvement of symptoms was observed. The multiplicity of possible diagnosis behind a eosinophilia is enhanced, as well as difficulties met upon treatment.
