Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe and identify the nexus of political conflict/violence and refugee movements from Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, and Chad. By integrating mass refugee movements into the general theory and research on political violence, this study adds an important dimension to the study of conflict processes. This study will quantitatively analyze the degree of association between refugee movements and political violence at the regional level taking into account the spatial and temporal dimensions of the phenomena and will probe into possible regional patterns of refugee formations. The research confirmed that refugee flows varied with the internationalization of domestic or region-specific conflicts because intervention alters the scope, frequency, and intensity of violence. Refugee movements increased with increases in casualty numbers. Refugee movements varied with variations in the frequency of domestic/regional military fighting but only if the latter produced a large scale casualty figure. -from Authors
