Abstract

Examines the role of women in off-farm employment (OFE) in a sample of South Sumatran transmigration schemes. The nature of women's participation in OFE within the sampled schemes is examined, looking at to what extent transmigrant women take up jobs away from their home farms, and how these may be characterized spatially. Secondly, investigates the structural characteristics of the OFE associated with adult married women of transmigrant families. Third, examines and explains OFE behavior among both men and women in terms of life course influences. The authors are especially concerned with the placement of women's employment activity into the large context of the family. In other words, how does the family life course and family composition in terms of the spacing and ages of children affect employment behavior? Finally, presents a descriptive and explanatory model that accounts for the observed employment behavior in both spatial and temporal dimensions. -from Authors
