Abstract

To assess the prevalence of intestinal parasites among Kurdish refugees coming from Eastern Turkey and the efficiency of their treatment stool specimens from 1114 refugees were collected: 537 (48.2%) were positive for intestinal parasites. More than one parasite was found in 189 (16.9%). 22.5% of the probands had E. histolytica, which was the most common protozoa isolated, followed by G. Iamblia (10.9%). Nematodes were frequent also: 22% of the refugees showed T. trichlura, and 10.9% E. vermicularis. The therapeutic regimen proved efficient in over 90%. 348 Swiss grocery store workers were taken as a control group: only 1.4% had evidence of intestinal parasites. We conclude that Kurdish refugees from Eastern Turkey should have their stools tested for parasites and subsequently be treated.
