Abstract

This paper summarizes the findings of a questionnaire survey among 1081 Palestinian refugee households in the three main camps, and their bordering squatter areas, in Amman. It details the demographic and housing characteristics of this poorest sector of Amman's population. The survey revealed little demographic variation across the population in the study areas, but there was some variety in its housing conditions. Despite much self-help home improvement, most refugee dwellings remain poorly-equipped and seriously overcrowded. In some respects these housing problems are more severe within the UNRWA-run camps. Respondents' opinions on their living conditions confirmed that household overcrowding and poor neighbourhood conditions—more common in the areas fringing the camps—were major causes of dissatisfaction. © 1994, Oxford University Press.
