Abstract

The problem of the Maghreb immigrants in Europe will be resolved most satisfactorily through cooperation between the source country and the host country. The immigration commenced in the 1860s with the arrival of relatively unskilled workers providing cheap labour. New voluntary repatriation and rehabilitiation, must be combined with measures favouring adaption in the European Community of those not returning to the source country. The Schengen and Maastricht treaties have not so far addressed these problems. -R.Hardbottle
