Abstract

As the evidence below suggests, there continues to be considerable and often heated debate concerning the effects of remittances on development. This paper reviews selected issues in the measurement of remittances and presents recent findings on the volume and direction of flows. It then considers evidence concerning the uses of remittances and their consequences for development, and finally discusses policy options for increasing and channeling remittance flows. -Author
