Abstract
The millions of refugees in Africa include a high proportion of children, juveniles and young adults. Nine out of 10 such refugees are emigrating to poor countries, which are often not able to provide sufficient education and training facilities even for their own citizens. Against this background various national and international organizations offer educational assistance to refugees. Among these organizations the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is providing the most extensive program. This article gives a critical assessment of the education and training assistance of the UNHCR in Africa. The article focuses specifically on aspects of educational problems and policies, but these are considered within the wider context of political, economic, socio-cultural and refugee-specific conditions and impact factors. -from Author
