Abstract
Objective: Describing the process of the first 16 months of an intervention in which three peer health educators for ethnic minorities were assigned to general practices in Rotterdam. The aim of the intervention was to optimise the communication between GP and ethnic minority patient and to increase the knowledge of the patient. Methods: Descriptive study in general practices in Rotterdam with a high proportion of ethnic minority patients listed. Registration of all consultations of three female health educators (one Turkish, one Morrocan and one Chinese) with patients on a specially designed form and semi-structured interviews with health educators and participating GPs. Results: Three health educators had 938 consultations with patients. Problems encountered were mostly psychological, chronic and social. These patients spoke hardly any Dutch and had a very low educational level (maximally primary school). GPs and health educators recognised a clear starting phase that was characterised by mutual adaptation. GPs and health educators concluded that the assignment was very useful and that it increased the quality of GP care for this hard-to-reach population.
