Abstract

SAHADERM consists of a global project of sanitary aid to the Sahara people displaced in refugee camps due to the lasting conflict of the area. This is a project conceived and arranged by the Canary Section of Médicos del Mundo, a non governmental medical organization (NGO), wich provides developing and warred countries with sanitary aid. The aim of the first step of SAHADERM project was to evaluate the sanitary situation in the Sahara refugee camps with special interest towards dermatological problems of this population. An expedition formed by two dermatologists, one plastic surgeon and three support members travelled to Tinduf and its environs where all the refugee camps are placed. The sanitary structure was analysed and a wide guide of the most frecuent skin diseases of that population was collected. The local doctors were trained to recognize and treat the most frecuent diseases of the area. The most important conclusion derived from the results of the first step of this project is that 90% of the skin conditions found in those refugee camps can be a1 ways diagnosed and treated on the spot by the local doctors providing they receive an appropriate training. That is why, we will try to improve and carry on with this training in the second step of the SAHADERM project.
