Abstract
A course has been established in Switzerland which helps women refugees to defend the health of themselves and their families. A major effort is made to meet their linguistic needs and to achieve cultural acceptability. The Association Genevoise d'Entraide aux Refugies was established in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1982 with the support of public and private funds to conduct activities to promote the integration of refugees. The association's Camarada center was opened in 1990 in an effort to help reduce the level of isolation experienced among women refugees. The center is a meeting place and a forum for exchanges between exiled women from various backgrounds who attend regularly with their young children and participate in French and needlework lessons, craft workshops, and an ironing and darning service for the local community. The activities provide a chance for the women to meet each other, experience a range of cultures, and become socially integrated. Most of the women who attend the center have come from countries in conflict, have been physically and psychologically deprived, have lost family members, and have endured cultural, social, and economic hardships. A course on health care is provided which includes instruction in emergencies and first aid, infectious and parasitic diseases, maternal and child health, nutrition, and hygiene.
