Survey findings on in-migrant women of childbearing age. (Article)

Abstract

This study describes the female population of childbearing age in 1998 in Haidian District, Beijing, China. Data were obtained from a family planning survey, in 1998, among a sample of 2300 women. In-migrants came from every province with the exception of Tibet, Qinghai, Guangxi, Ningxia, and Hainan. Most in-migrants came from neighboring Hebei and centrally located Anhui and Henan. 90% of in-migrants came from rural areas. Economic reasons were the primary motivation for migration. 40% of women were engaged in business, 48.5% had odd jobs, and 11.5% were professionals. 1319 were married. 31.8% were aged 20-24 years. 1543 women held temporary residence permits and 1351 had family planning certificates. Of 840 women who should have had a pregnancy check-up, only 194 actually did so. 83.9% of women had given birth at least once. 34.5% had 2 children; 2.4% had over 2 children. 1066 (80.8%) used contraception; 218 (19.2%) did not. Most of the floating population were not well educated. Four suggestions were made for managing the floating population.
