Abstract

Kampuchean refugees migrating to Malaysia were screened for various parasitic infections with special reference to schistosomiasis following the discovery of cases of schistosomiasis amongst them in Thailand. Five surveys were conducted at the Cherating refugee camp between 1982-1990 to determine the prevalence of parasitic infections. The period prevalence of schistosomiasis among the Kampuchean refugees ranged from 5.2-49.7 cases/1000 populations from 1982-1990. Generally, other helminthic and protozoan infections were low in prevalence and that they showed a declining pattern of prevalence with subsequent surveys, reflecting better sanitation and personal hygiene. This study established the existence of schistosomiasis cases among the Kampuchean refugees settling in Malaysia.
