Substance use disorders among young minority refugees: Common themes in a clinical sample (Article)

Abstract

Data collected on 13 young drug-using refugees were as follows: demography (age, ethnicity, marital status, employment); premigration, migration, and postmigration history; substance use history; scores on two rating scales for substance use; and comorbid psychiatric symptoms and disorders. Primary drug use diagnosis included 6 cases of opium-heroin dependence, 3 cannabis use/dependence, 2 combined alcohol/alcohol-cannabis, 1 alcohol use, and 1 cocaine dependent. Countries-of-origin included Cambodia, Cuba, Ethiopia, Laos, Palestine, and Vietnam. Four of 6 teenagers were unaccompanied minors.
