Abstract

Since 2015, policies regarding migration have significantly impacted the health of those seeking refuge and asylum in Europe. The health of millions of migrants, vulnerable women, men and unaccompanied minors is being threatened by increasing prejudice and false representation. Furthermore, medicine can be exploited for purposes of migratory control. Active in France and the rest of Europe, in conflict zones and areas of extreme poverty, Medecins du Monde confirms that the current protection and care package provided to migrants is insufficient for them to recover from the violence experienced in their country of origin and during their migration journey. Although the pathologies we encounter are not specific to migrants, the trauma they suffered has often profound and long lasting physical and mental consequences. France and the other European countries should provide suitable accommodation, support and appropriate care consistent with our humanitarian and solidarity values. © 2019 Published by Elsevier Masson SAS on behalf of Academie Nationale De Medecine.
