Abstract

Background: One out of three unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, only few of them receive psychotherapy. Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) is currently one of the manuals for children and adolescents with PTSD with the best evidence. In a case series with URMs, TF-CBT showed promising results regarding feasibility and symptom reduction. Currently, we run an uncontrolled pilot trial to systemize the specific needs of URMs in manualized treatment. We present the case of an URM with PTSD from this pilot study to offer insights into the work with this manual for this group of patients. Case Report: The 17-year-old multiply traumatized patient from Afghanistan entered psychotherapy with the diagnoses PTSD and major depression. He was treated according to the TF-CBT manual, which allowed culture-sensitive adaptation of the treatment modules. At the end of the treatment, he no longer met the diagnoses. Conclusions: TF-CBT offers a culture-sensitive and evidence-based treatment of URMs with PTSD. It is a promising treatment manual for this group of patients. © 2018 S. Karger AG, Basel.
